Installation
It is a translucent thermoplastic polymer used to make plastic packaging. Dekavie deck boards are made with high-density (HD) polyethylene (PE) sourced from containers such as windshield washer fluid, laundry detergent, and orange juice jugs. These recycled materials are processed, re-granulated, and then reused. This is what we call a "circular economy," which helps protect the environment!
First, Dekavie deck boards are not a composite material (a blend of plastic and wood) like the ones you would find in big-box stores. They are made of 100% recycled plastic. No wood means no rotting. They require no maintenance: no sanding, no painting, and no staining. Moreover, they are stain-resistant since plastic does not absorb liquids.
Dekavie patio boards will not fade over the years. Their colour does not change regardless of the weather conditions they are exposed to. The same applies to their durability: they will remain as solid as they were when first installed.
100% plastic retains less heat than composite, fiberglass, concrete, or stone (paved) surfaces. The heat level is comparable to wood and is largely determined by your choice of colour. The darker the colour, the warmer the surface (dark colours absorb rather than reflect sunlight). This is therefore an important factor to consider when choosing your colour, based on the orientation of your deck.
All materials react to outside temperatures, and plastic is no exception. In hot temperatures, the boards will expand slightly in length (not in width). In cold temperatures, the boards will shrink. This is why boards must never be installed end-to-end.
No. Water will flow between the boards. If your structure is made of wood, simply install a protective membrane on the joists to prevent rot (available upon request when ordering). Several waterproofing options are also available for the storage area under your deck, if applicable (see Goberco products).
Dekavie products are not slippery, even when wet. However, snow can make them slightly slippery since it does not adhere to plastic. We recommend clearing your patio with a plastic shovel and walking carefully, as you would on any other surface. Applying salt is also a good idea to prevent slipping, as it will not damage the boards.
No. However, if your furniture has iron legs, we recommend adding felt pads or gliding pads underneath. And since the colour of the boards runs throughout the material, any scratches that do occur will not be visible.
Installation
100% recycled plastic is not structural like wood and, in the heat, it expands slightly. So yes, there are a few rules to follow when building your patio:
- For boards 20 ft or less, joists must be installed every 12″. For boards over 20 ft, joists must be installed every 10″.
- Do not install boards end-to-end lengthwise.
- Install the boards at a temperature between 50°F and 68°F (10°C and 20°C).
- Always allow the board to protrude approximately 1.5″ beyond the structure.
Refer to the Installation Guide for all the details regarding these rules.
You will need the same tools you would use with wood. Dekavie products do not require any specialized tools or sanding.

Maintenance
Since the colour is integrated directly into the plastic, the boards will never require painting or staining. The colour runs throughout the entire board.
Our product requires no specific maintenance. For cleaning, use a mild soap and rinse with water. (a pressure washer works great) If you spill a highly staining substance such as red wine, rinse the boards with water promptly. We recommend placing a mat under the BBQ to protect the boards from cooking grease (it can be cleaned, but may require extra time and effort).
Boards are easier to clean in warm weather, as heat causes them to expand slightly, making the surface easier to work with.
This is a very rare phenomenon that affects approximately two clients per year. It tends to occur in areas with high wind, intense sun, and low humidity : conditions that promote electrostatic buildup. There is no danger with propane BBQs, as the static charge is not strong enough to cause a spark or ignition. If you experience this issue, here are a few solutions:
- Wash the patio with water and fabric softener to help neutralize the electrical charge.
- Install a copper cable connected to a ground, which will discharge the static from the patio.
- Use a product called ACL Staticide, specifically designed to prevent and control static electricity. It is available at various retailers.
To remove stubborn rust stains, use Bar Keepers Friend. (Always test on a small area first to ensure the product does not discolour the plastic.)
Steps :
- Sprinkle a small amount of Bar Keepers Friend powder on the stain (do not let it dry).
- Gently scrub with a non-scratch pad, soft brush, or sponge.
- Rinse and wipe dry.
